On July 17, 2020, the Wajir Council of Elders issued a warning to members of the Ogaden community in Wajir, Kenya, cautioning them against undermining peacebuilding efforts in the region.
The warning comes after a recent peace meeting between members of the Degodia and Marehan communities, which aimed to resolve conflicts and enhance security along the Kenya-Somali border.
According to the Wajir Council of Elders, some members of the Ogaden community have been pouring cold water on the peacebuilding efforts, which have been implemented by neighboring communities.
Roble Mohamed, the chair of the Wajir Council of Elders, emphasized that the recent meeting between the Degodia and Marehan communities was successful and aimed to discuss suitable conflict resolution mechanisms to end the perennial conflict between the two communities.
The elders expressed concern that some disgruntled leaders have politicized ongoing peace efforts in the region, which has been plagued by tribal conflicts with often fatal consequences.
