Kenya's golf scene is back in action, with several clubs hosting tournaments despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The July Monthly Mug at Ruiru Sports Club is one such event, which has been a staple in the golf calendar for 20 years.

Polycap Igathe, a club member and Group Chief Commercial Officer at Equity Bank, has been sponsoring the event since 2000. 'I started sponsoring the July Mug in 2000. It was my way of socialising with my friends in my home town. Being a proud member of the Club, it always gives a great pleasure in sponsoring the July Mug. I thank God who has been gracious enough in enabling me to sponsor every year,' Igathe said.

Club captain Thomas Mwaura notes that the course has been well-prepared for the resumption of golf, but the recent rains have made the rough tough. 'Here we strictly follow the Covid-19 pandemic guidelines where the players leave after their having consistently supported the July Mug for two decades besides other support he has given to the club,' Mwaura said.

Other notable players expected to participate in the tournament include club chairman Peter Mwaura, Ben Omondi, Patrick Wainaina, Willy Kagicha, and Catherine Wambui. Meanwhile, at Vet Lab Sports Club, Adam Nyaga will host the April Monthly Mug, which has attracted a smaller field of 60 players.

Down at the Coast, Nyali Golf and Country Club will stage the March Monthly Mug, which has also attracted a small field. Some of the players expected to vie for the Mug include single handicappers Kim Lanxe, William Kaguta, and Omar Kaingu Lewa.
