Breaking Free from Fashion Rules

Published on July 17, 2020, by Esther Muchene, fashion has always been a personal expression. While there's no one to dictate what you can and can't wear, certain unspoken fashion rules still exist. However, with the evolution of fashion, many of these rules are no longer applicable.

One such rule is the need to wear only what's in style. Trends and fads can be overwhelming, and it's essential to express yourself through your clothing choices. Consider collecting classic designs from the 70's and 80's and making them your own. Fashion always repeats itself, and timeless pieces are always in style.

Another outdated rule is the notion that you should dress your age. While it's essential to look age-appropriate, there's no problem wearing a leather jacket or skinny jeans, even if you're 60. How you pair these items will determine whether it's a hit or miss.

Additionally, the rule that two or more prints should never be mixed is outdated. With the help of fashion tips and tutorials, mixing prints has become an art form. It's not for everyone, but with practice, anyone can learn how to do it.

Red and pink, once considered a no-no, can now be mixed and matched. However, it's essential to combine contrasting shades with softer, more subtle shades to create a harmonious look.

Short women can wear maxi dresses, and it's not about overwhelming the frame but about finding a design that flatters their curves. Anyone can wear a maxi dress as long as it's styled correctly.

Another outdated rule is the need for all jewelry to match. In the past, it was thought to be stylish to wear a whole matching set of pearl earrings with its necklace and bracelets. However, in today's fashion era, it's considered tacky. Wearing unique pieces when layering necklaces or combining different rings brings out a more aesthetic look to your outfit.

Lastly, the rule that you must shop in your section is no longer applicable. Don't be afraid to venture out of your comfort zone and explore different sections, even if it's the men's section. You might discover great pieces you wouldn't have seen otherwise.
