On July 17, 2020, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) announced the appointment of Mucai Kunyiha as its new chairperson, effective for a two-year term.
Kunyiha, the current Managing Director of Cooper (K) Brands Limited, takes over from Sachen Gudka, who will remain as an ex-officio member of the board, providing advisory support to the association.
The appointment comes at a challenging time for manufacturers in Kenya, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the country's economy, leading to reduced earnings and low demand.
According to a recent report by KAM and KPMG, 78% of manufacturers are exploring cost-cutting measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic.
Speaking on his appointment, Kunyiha emphasized the need for urgent and diligent action to develop rebound strategies and policies that will help the economy recover and increase the sector's contribution to GDP exponentially.
As the new chairperson, Kunyiha has pledged to continue KAM's commitment to advocating for coherent policies, supporting industrial growth, and pushing for predictability in fiscal and regulatory frameworks, as well as supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Rajan Shah, CEO of Capwell Industries Limited, will serve as Kunyiha's deputy.
