Kenya Railways Company has acquired 11 refurbished diesel train units from Spanish firm Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) for a total of 9.6 million euros (approximately KSh 1.17 billion).

The train units, consisting of 10 double and one triple unit, were sold to Kenya Railways Company after a negotiation process that started in December 2018.

The sale agreement was signed on April 20, 2020, in an act attended by the Minister of Mobility and Housing, Marc Pons, and the Kenyan ambassador to Spain, Richard Opembe, among others.

The refurbished train units are expected to have an additional life span of about 25 years and will be transported by boat to Barcelona and then to the Port of Mombasa.

Urban Development PS Charles Hinga announced that the units will arrive in Kenya next month, with operations starting at the SFM workshops in Son Rullan, where the train units have begun loading.

The sale includes the price of the units, spare parts, wheel profiling, and training of Kenya Railways staff by internal SFM staff.
