On July 17, 2020, Kenya received a welcome boost in its fight against COVID-19 as Cuba announced it would be sending a team of 20 specialized doctors to the country.
The team, part of the prestigious Henry Reeve Medical Brigade, was constituted by Fidel Castro in 2005 to deal with emergencies and serious epidemics.
According to the Kenyan ambassador to Cuba, Mr. Anthony Muchiri, the team was expected to arrive in Nairobi on the same day, bringing with it a wealth of medical expertise and experience.
"The team is on its way to Kenya," Mr. Muchiri said in a statement.
"This humanitarian mission, which comes at no cost to the recipient country, is a testament to the strong bilateral relations between Cuba and Kenya," he added.
The Cuban doctors will be joining a team of medics already in Kenya, who have been working tirelessly to combat the spread of the virus.
Kenya's Health Cabinet Secretary, Mutahi Kagwe, had previously written to the Council of Governors chairman, Wycliffe Oparanya, to inform him that the Memorandum of Understanding signed in May 2018 had been renewed.
