Real Madrid Clinch 34th La Liga Title ¶
On July 17, 2020, Real Madrid were crowned La Liga champions for the 34th time after Karim Benzema scored twice in a 2-1 victory over Villarreal, securing the title with one game to spare.
Real Madrid's victory marked their third La Liga title in eight years, following a relentless run of form since Spanish football resumed on June 11, 2020, after the coronavirus pandemic.
Under the leadership of Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid have won 10 games out of 10 since the restart, conceding only three goals in that time and never being behind in a match.
"For me, this is one of the best days in my professional career," said Zidane. "After lockdown and everything, it's astonishing."
Real Madrid's title win was also a testament to the team's resilience and determination, with Benzema's double taking his tally for the season to 26 in all competitions.
Meanwhile, Barcelona's title challenge ended in a tame defeat, with Quique Setien's position under scrutiny after the team's poor performance.
"Things have to change," said Lionel Messi. "Everyone here in the club will be feeling very angry about what has happened this season, and that's normal. The players feel like that too."
