On July 17, 2020, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji made a surprise move by dropping murder charges against Omar Lali, the boyfriend of the late Keroche Breweries heiress Tecra Muigai.

Instead of proceeding with the trial, Haji requested an open inquest into Tecra's death, which has led to Omar's unconditional release.

Tecra, 31, served as the director of innovation and strategy at Keroche until her passing. She was the daughter of Keroche Breweries founders Joseph Karanja and his wife Tabitha Karanja.

On May 2, 2020, Tecra passed away while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital, a few days after she allegedly fell down the stairs at a holiday home in Lamu, where she was living with Omar.

According to an autopsy report, Tecra succumbed to injuries she suffered on the left side of her head, which were consistent with a fall down the stairs, as stated by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor.
