On July 16, 2020, singer Betty Bayo shared her story of a tumultuous marriage to Pastor Victor Kanyari in a candid interview.
According to Bayo, she met Kanyari three weeks before her introduction to her family, after her then-boyfriend dumped her. She jokingly asked Kanyari to act as her boyfriend, and he agreed.
Bayo revealed that she moved in with Kanyari, only to discover that he was living with six women in the same house. The women had no boundaries and would often enter the couple's bedroom without knocking, leaving Bayo with no privacy.
She also claimed that the women would dress Kanyari, and that she had no power to make decisions in her own home. At times, Bayo was forced to lie in church, which she felt was not right.
Bayo's mother-in-law allegedly forced her to support Kanyari's ministry, offering her a salary of KSh 30,000 every Sunday in exchange for attending church with her son. Bayo turned down the offer, but claimed that her mother-in-law instructed Kanyari to never give her money.
Bayo's marriage to Kanyari ended after a scandal involving KSh 310,000.
