On July 3, 2020, Tecra Muigai, the Keroche Breweries Director of Innovation, died under mysterious circumstances at her home in Naivasha. Her boyfriend, Omar Lali, was later charged with her murder.
However, on July 13, 2020, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Hadji dropped the murder charges against Lali, citing the need for a fresh probe to establish the circumstances surrounding Muigai's death.
Lali had been in police custody for several days, awaiting trial. His release comes as a surprise to many, given the severity of the charges against him.
The case has been shrouded in controversy, with multiple accounts emerging about the circumstances of Muigai's death. While the family initially claimed that she had died in an accident, her younger sister later disputed this narrative, suggesting that Muigai may have been pushed to her death.
A postmortem examination revealed that Muigai had died from head injuries, but the cause of these injuries remains unclear.
As the investigation into Muigai's death continues, Lali's release has raised more questions than answers. The case is a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges of the Kenyan justice system.
