On July 16, 2020, The Athletics Association, a global organization, formally launched its operations, marking a significant milestone in the fight for athletes' rights. The association's president, Christian Taylor, announced the launch, which was necessitated by an outcry from athletes globally.
As part of its mission, The Athletics Association has appointed Julius Yego, a 2016 Rio Olympic Games javelin silver medallist, as the head of Africa. Yego, who taught himself the craft of javelin throwing through watching YouTube videos, expressed his gratitude and humility upon being elected as the African representative.
"I am very much happy and humbled to have been elected board member of The Athletics Association, as the African representative," Yego stated on Twitter. "Thank you everyone who took part in this process. I will strive to help all and sundry, for the rights of athletes," he added.
The National Olympic Committee of Kenya also congratulated Yego on his new appointment, stating, "Julius Yego, congratulations on your selection as board member representing african athletes. July 16, 2020 Today marks the formal launch of The Athletics Association, an independent organization established for athletes, by athletes."
