On July 14, 2020, National Geographic announced the selection of two Kenyan teenagers, Tiassa Samayin Mutunkei and Richard Turere, for the Young Explorers 2020 program.
Both 19-year-olds were chosen for their exemplary leadership skills and contributions to conservation in their respective communities.
"These young leaders are joining the ranks of thousands of explorers who came before them, receiving funding, and finding connections and community with like-minded peers," said National Geographic in a statement.
Founded by Mutunkei at the age of 15, Teens4Wildlife is a platform for Kenyan and African youth to share, learn, explore, and take action on behalf of Africa's wildlife.
Richard Turere, on the other hand, rose to fame for his ingenious invention of lion lights, which repel lions from areas holding livestock, virtually eliminating depredation and human-wildlife conflict cases.
The Young Explorers program, dubbed #GenGeo, represents six countries and includes efforts ranging from storytelling and scientific innovation to conservation, education, and civic engagement.
