Kenyan Ceda Ogada has been named as the International Monetary Fund's next Secretary and Director of the Secretary's Department, a position he will take up on September 1, 2020.

With 21 years of experience at the IMF, Mr. Ogada has progressed through the ranks, becoming the institution's Deputy General Counsel in 2014.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva praised Mr. Ogada's 'outstanding institutional knowledge, strategic and intellectual heft, and people leadership,' saying he will help the Fund serve its member countries effectively in a challenging economic environment.

Mr. Ogada's achievements include managing the Eurozone crisis during the global financial crisis, according to the IMF.

Before joining the IMF, Mr. Ogada worked as a legal expert at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

He received his education at Lenana School and Aga Khan Academy in Nairobi, and holds a Liberal Arts degree from New Hampshire Dartmouth College and a Juris Doctor from the Harvard Law School.

Mr. Ogada is set to replace Jianhai Lin, who is retiring.
