On 14 March, Rwanda ordered the closure of churches and schools across the country, just hours after the first case of Covid-19 was reported.
However, on 14 March, Rwanda's Prime Minister's office announced that churches would be allowed to reopen, but with strict conditions to limit the spread of coronavirus.
According to the statement, churchgoers will have to be registered at the entrance, maintain a 1.5m distance, and wear masks. Additionally, congregants will not be allowed to give offerings in cash, and children under the age of 12 will not be permitted to attend.
Bishop Philippe Rukamba of the Council of Catholic Bishops in Rwanda told the BBC that when they were allowed to reopen, 'Catholic tradition order of Mass would remain the same, but the how would change.'
While some Rwandans have praised the decision, others have complained that bars – which remain closed – should also be allowed to open.
As of now, Rwanda has recorded 1,435 cases of Covid-19 and four deaths.
Schools will remain closed until September.
