Landlady Charged with Breaking into Landlord's House, Stealing Valuables ¶
Matilda Njoki Ndungu, a landlady from Nairobi, has been charged with breaking into her landlord's house and stealing valuables worth KSh 153,000.
According to the charges, Ndungu broke into her landlord's house on July 12, 2020, and stole valuables worth KSh 153,000.
She was arrested on July 15, 2020, and appeared before Makadara Principal Magistrate Heston Nyaga.
During the hearing, Ndungu denied the charges, claiming that her landlord, George Wambugu, had given her the keys to the house.
She alleged that Wambugu had failed to pay a KSh 25,000 rent arrears, despite promising to do so.
Ndungu also claimed that Wambugu had lied to her, telling her that he had paid the rent, when in fact he had not.
She was released on a KSh 70,000 bond and the case was set to be heard on October 1, 2020.
Ndungu's arrest comes at a time when there have been reports of landowners and tenants clashing over rent arrears, with some landowners allegedly breaking into their tenants' houses and stealing their belongings.
According to reports, some landowners have been taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to extort money from their tenants, with some even breaking into their houses and stealing their belongings.
However, the Kenya Landlords Association has denied these allegations, saying that they are working with the government to find a solution to the problem.
Ndungu's case has sparked a lot of debate, with some people calling for her to be punished for her actions, while others are calling for her to be given a second chance.
