On July 16, 2020, Kenya's Health Ministry Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced 421 new COVID-19 cases, raising the national tally to 11,637.
According to Kagwe, the new cases were reported after 3,895 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of samples tested to 230,096.
Out of the 421 new cases, 409 were Kenyan nationals, while 12 were foreign nationals. The youngest patient was a one-year-old baby, and the oldest was a 93-year-old man.
Of the new cases, 297 were males, and 124 were females. The cases were reported in 42 out of 47 counties, with Nairobi leading in the number of cases.
During a press conference in Nakuru, Kagwe announced that 570 more patients had recovered, with 12 recovering while undergoing home-based care and 512 recovering while in various health facilities across the country.
This was the first time Kenya had recorded the highest number of recoveries in a day since the outbreak of the virus.
Additionally, Kagwe announced that the government would embark on home-based care due to reports of overcrowding in health facilities.
The total number of recoveries now stands at 3,638, while the total number of fatalities stands at 217, with 8 more patients succumbing to the respiratory disease.
