On July 15, 2020, Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua announced a significant surge in COVID-19 cases in the county, with 68 new cases confirmed after a mass testing exercise at a factory.
According to the Governor, 25 of the new cases are from the Athi River area, while four cases are from patients at Machakos Level 5 hospital.
“Currently, 90% of all Machakos cases are from Mavoko area – Athi River & Mlolongo which border Nairobi. Patients of the new cases are all asymptomatic,” said Dr. Mutua, adding that “we will continue educating the public & enforcing set guidelines.”
The number of COVID-19 cases in Kenya rose to 11,252 after 461 new infections were recorded on July 15, 2020, following the testing of 4,261 samples over the last 24 hours.
Additionally, 51 more people have recovered from the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 3,068.
