On July 16, 2020, the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women and DHL Express launched HerVenture, a mobile application designed to equip women entrepreneurs in Kenya with the skills needed to thrive in the digital world.
The virtual launch, attended by Cabinet Secretary for the Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Professor Margret Kobia, marked the second African country to benefit from the app, following Nigeria.
According to Cherie Blair, founder of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed the way we live and work, pushing businesses further into a digital world. To survive, many businesses must move online, but women entrepreneurs often lack the access and skills to adapt.
GSMA's Mobile Gender Gap Report 2020 highlights the disparity in mobile technology access and skills between men and women, with women being less likely to have the necessary skills to use mobile technology to adapt their businesses.
HerVenture aims to address this gap by providing women entrepreneurs with a new e-commerce learning track to support business digitization. The app's content is presented in bite-sized, easy-to-understand formats, including swipe-able cards and videos.
The app aims to reach 10,000 women entrepreneurs in Kenya and provide them with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital world.
