On July 15, 2020, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) made a significant move to ease the burden on job seekers by waiving the Sh1,000 fee for compliance certificates.

This decision comes after numerous complaints from job seekers who felt the fee was punitive, especially for those who did not benefit from student loans.

HELB's chief executive officer, Charles Ringera, acknowledged the challenges faced by Kenyans, including unemployment, slow economic growth, and the escalating cost of living, which have been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

As a result, Kenyans will now be able to access HELB compliance certificates free of charge from the agency's website and the e-Citizen portal.
