On July 16, 2020, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino made headlines with an unconventional statement about President Uhuru Kenyatta's future in Kenyan politics. According to Owino, the President is still young and the country needs him in the next government.
"President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta is the next Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya. My President is still Young and we need him in the next Government," Owino tweeted.
Top handlers of President Kenyatta, including Vice Chairman of the ruling party David Murathe, share a similar view. They believe that even though the constitution bars President Kenyatta from vying for another presidential term, he can still serve the country as a Prime Minister.
"The president still has enough time to finish his development agenda he had in mind in 2013. He still is capable and strong to lead, even after 2022," Murathe said in June.
Some MPs from the Mt Kenya region also feel that the Head of State deserves another term, not only because of his age, but also due to the feeling that DP William Ruto has not given Uhuru enough time to deliver on his promises.
