On July 15, 2020, Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu appeared on Kenyan TV to address the circumstances surrounding his move to Kenya nearly three years prior.

Speaking to tv47 's Abubakar Abdullahi, Lissu dismissed allegations that he had secretly left Tanzania following the attempted assassination in September 2017.

According to Lissu, the decision to airlift him to Nairobi was made in a meeting at Dodoma regional hospital with all the house members present. He claimed that President John Magufuli was aware of his whereabouts every day and had even promised to visit him in Nairobi, but failed to do so.

Lissu also criticized President Magufuli's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, ridiculing the decision to ignore health and safety measures recommended by the World Health Organization.

He further accused the Magufuli administration of causing the collapse of the East African community by isolating Tanzania from the region and questioned the accountability of the government, stating that the country's resources were being exploited with little revenue generated.
