Published on July 16, 2020, Corteva Agriscience has launched a series of training programs aimed at empowering 20,000 farmers, youth, and agriculture communities in Kenya with sustainable agriculture practices.
The programs, launched by Corteva Agriscience Country Lead for Kenya and the Great Lakes Region, Humphrey Kiruaye, are aligned with the company's 2030 sustainability goal to train 25 million farmers worldwide and enrich the lives of 500 million farmers globally.
One of the key initiatives is the Corteva Agriscience Women In Agriculture (COWIA) program, which provides technical support to women farmer groups. Already, 2,000 women farmers in Meru County have benefited from quality hybrid seed varieties and access to agronomic education, on-farm training, extension services, financial services, and market facilitation.
Another project, the One School One Acre (Shule Moja Eka Moja), involves planting one-acre demonstration plots in 35 identified schools across seven counties in Kenya. The project aims to train 20,000 primary school learners and their parents on sustainable agriculture and food production.
Speaking at the launch of Corteva's 2030 global sustainability goals, Humphrey Kiruaye highlighted the success of the company's work with women farmers in Meru County, who have seen a 25% increase in crop yield.
Joseph Anampiu, Corteva Agriscience Commercial Unit Leader for Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa, emphasized the importance of digital and social media platforms in reaching farmers with crucial information during the COVID-19 pandemic.
U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Kyle McCarter, and Corteva Agriscience President for Africa Middle East, Prabdeep Bajwa, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the company's commitment to sustainable agriculture and its role in addressing the challenges faced by farmers in Kenya.
