On July 15, 2020, a police officer linked to the shooting of a 30-year-old cobbler in Lessos, Nandi county, appeared in an Eldoret court where he denied the murder charges against him.
The interdicted police constable, Sammy Onyango, was accused of shooting Lazarus Tirop in cold blood on June 25, 2020.
According to the charge sheet, Onyango killed Tirop after he intervened when a police officer demanded a KSh 50 bribe from a boda boda operator for not wearing a mask.
Reports indicate that Onyango was taken through a mental assessment and a COVID-19 test before taking the plea.
Onyango's lawyer, Judy Muiruri, asked the court to release the suspect to be released on bail, and the court will hear his bail application on Friday, July 17.
Until then, Onyango will be held at Eldoret West Police Station.
