Kenyan Appointed as IMF Secretary ¶
On July 15, 2020, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced the appointment of Ceda Ogada, a Kenyan national, as the Secretary of the Fund and Director of the Secretary's Department. This appointment is effective from September 1, 2020.
Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the IMF, praised Mr. Ogada's 'outstanding institutional knowledge, strategic and intellectual heft, and people leadership.' She noted that his ability to bring people together, combined with his appreciation of the Fund's history and legal principles, will help the Fund serve its member countries effectively in a challenging economic environment.
Mr. Ogada joined the IMF's Legal Department in 1999 and rose through the ranks to become Deputy General Counsel in 2014. He has worked on various aspects of the Fund's work, including advising on governance, country operations, and policy development. Key projects he has worked on include the Fund's enhanced policy to address governance and corruption issues, and reforms in lending policy such as the establishment of the Flexible Credit Line (FCL) and the Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust (CCRT).
Mr. Ogada has also been involved in the work on euro area crisis countries during the global financial crisis and has led the Legal Department's work in promoting good governance and transparency in several countries, including with respect to the use of emergency financing for the COVID-19 crisis.
