On July 15, 2020, a member of the Kirinyaga County Assembly (MCA) was charged with forgery and fraud in a case that has sparked controversy in the region.

John Babtist Kanga, the Wamumu Ward MCA, was accused of forging land documents in an alleged bid to defraud four families of their parcels of land worth millions of shillings.

The alleged scam, which took place on December 1, 2013, at Wanguru township in Kirinyaga, involved Kanga and his accomplice, Samson Theiru, who forged an allotment letter for Plot No. Wanguru/160.

The duo also faced charges of making a false allotment letter for the same plot, as well as false and fraudulent representation at the Kerugoya Registrar.

According to the prosecution, the two men presented the forged document to the officer to sign and execute the certificate.

Kanga pleaded not guilty to the charges, but the prosecution informed the court that it is ready to start hearing and has lined up 11 witnesses to give evidence against the MCA.

Should he be found guilty, Kanga faces up to four years in prison.
