On July 15, 2020, Tunisia's Prime Minister Elyes Fakhfakh resigned amidst a deepening political crisis, triggered by allegations of conflict of interest.

Ennahdha, the largest party in parliament, had tabled a no-confidence motion against Fakhfakh, citing concerns over his ability to lead the government effectively.

Ennahdha's decision to table the motion came after Fakhfakh took office in February 2020, following four months of deadlock in parliament.

Ennahdha had initially nominated an independent candidate for prime minister, but he failed to secure the necessary support from parliament, leading President Kais Saied to appoint Fakhfakh for the post.

Since taking office, Fakhfakh has faced intense scrutiny over his alleged failure to disclose shares he owns in private companies that have secured public contracts.

"The economic and social situation is very serious and can only be overcome by a government whose head is not suspected of any conflict of interest," said Abdelkarim Harouni, a senior Ennahdha official, in a statement on July 13, 2020.
