On July 15, 2020, National Assembly Majority Leader Amos Kimunya made his presence felt in parliament with a stern warning to lazy committee members.
Kimunya, the Kipipiri MP, emphasized that it would not be business as usual, stating that any committee member who fails to attend meetings has no business being a member of that committee.
“Those who do not attend the meetings have no business being members of those committees. They should be removed,” Kimunya said.
He further stated that a parliamentary committee member who does not attend four sittings is supposed to be reported, and he would take it up as the Majority Leader.
Kimunya's warning comes after the newly elected majority leader presented a list of newly elected Parliamentary Committee members to the Parliament, which was agreed upon by all members of parliament.
ODM made its debut at the leadership of various committees previously held by Jubilee, including the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, which is tasked with critical analysis of issues brought before them and making recommendations for actions.
The Speaker of National Assembly Justin Muturi also confirmed that some Members had been receiving allowances for meetings they did not attend and risk being withdrawn from those Committees.
Both the chair, vice-chair, and ordinary Committee members earn a substantial amount of money in the form of allowance per sitting.
