On July 15, 2020, Tunisian Prime Minister Elyes Fakhfakh submitted his resignation, marking a significant development in the country's political landscape.
Fakhfakh's decision came after a prolonged period of strained relations with the Islamist-inspired Ennahdha party, which had tabled a no-confidence motion against him earlier that day.
The Ennahdha party, which emerged as the largest party in parliament following the October 2019 legislative elections, had initially nominated an independent candidate for the premiership but failed to secure the necessary support.
President Kais Saied subsequently appointed Fakhfakh, a former finance minister, as the new prime minister in February 2020, following four months of deadlock.
Fakhfakh's resignation has been linked to ongoing investigations into allegations of conflict of interest, including his failure to hand over control of shares he owns in private companies that have secured public contracts.
