On July 15, 2020, the Council of Governors (COG) Chairman Wycliffe Oparanya called for the implementation of an insurance package recommended by President Uhuru Kenyatta to support families of healthcare workers.
The package, which was proposed to benefit the families of four health workers who have passed away and those on the front line in the fight against COVID-19, has yet to be actualized.
COG expressed concern over the rising number of positive cases after the cessation of movement was lifted, describing the statistics as worrying.
Oparanya hinted that counties in consultation with the President may not hesitate to seek a lockdown for affected counties if the situation deteriorates.
He condemned the ignorance portrayed by Kenyans, particularly those partying in bars, saying individuals must take personal responsibility in the fight against COVID-19.
COG revealed that counties are fully prepared in the fight against COVID-19, with a total of 271 isolation centers and 12,034 beds set up, as well as 447 ICU beds and 437 ventilators dedicated to the fight.
However, Oparanya expressed concern over the withdrawal of ambulance services in most counties by the Ministry of Health, which he said will derail the movement of patients with COVID-19.
COG has trained a total of 23,280 healthcare workers and 64,283 community health volunteers to support the fight against COVID-19.
