July 15, 2020 - The Kenyan government is considering reopening sports activities, particularly non-contact sports, four months after they were banned due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman made the announcement during a COVID-19 daily briefing, stating that the government aims to revive the sports sector to boost the economy.

"We have opened up certain sectors of the economy, and sports contributes significantly to our economy and the well-being of our people," Aman said. "We must do what we can to get our sports system working again."

Aman emphasized that non-contact sports, such as athletics, can be safely resumed, as they do not pose a significant risk of transmission. He expressed hope that Kenyan athletes can compete and bring glory to the country.

However, contact sports that attract large crowds, such as football and rugby, will require further consideration. The government will assess the feasibility of resuming these sports while ensuring the safety of fans.

The development comes as a welcome relief to Kenyan athletes, who are preparing to host the inaugural World Continental Tour Nairobi leg at the Nyayo National Stadium on September 26.
