On July 15, 2020, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa announced a significant development for the Kenyan Premier League (KPL). A foreign betting company had agreed to pump over Sh1.2 billion into the top league for the next five seasons.
According to Mwendwa, each KPL club would receive Sh8 million per season, starting from the 2020/21 season. The deal was a major boost for the league, which had been facing financial challenges.
It is worth noting that Mwendwa referred to the top league as the FKF Premier League, rather than the Kenyan Premier League. This was not the first time the federation had expressed interest in running the league, with Mwendwa stating that the federation would not renew the contract with KPL when it expires in August.
