Chuka University in Tharaka Nithi County has made history by becoming the first public institution to be cleared for reopening on August 3, 2020, following an inspection by the Ministry of Education.
According to the Ministry of Education, the institution had complied with all the laid-out health guidelines, making it safe for students to return to campus.
University Education and Research Principal Secretary Simon Nabukwesi confirmed that the university was at liberty to resume academic sessions, with final year, PhD, and Masters students being the first to resume studies.
Nabukwesi stated, "Once the finalist students have completed their studies, they will create space for those reporting in September," indicating a phased return strategy for the institution.
Chuka University Vice-Chancellor Erastus Njoka said the institution was doing its best to meet the requirements for reopening, including producing alcohol-based sanitisers and liquid handwashing soap for use by students and the neighbouring community.
The university had also procured thermo-guns to monitor the temperatures of university students and staff, as well as visitors.
Universities are expected to have adequate supplies of face masks, sanitisers, and running water, as well as enough facilities to ensure social distancing.
Chuka University's reopening is a significant milestone in the country's efforts to resume academic activities amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
