Published on July 15, 2020, four police officers charged with the murder of lawyer Willy Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda, and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri have applied for bail, citing COVID-19 risks in prison.

The officers, Fredrick Leliman, Stephen Cheburet, Sylvia Wanjiku, and Leonard Maina Mwangi, have been in custody since 2016.

They claim that with the current pandemic, their lives are at risk and could die if the virus enters the prison.

The matter was adjourned on Wednesday after trial Judge Jessie Lesiit raised concern over the small court in which the proceedings were to take place.

So far, 41 of the prosecution's 43 witnesses have testified in the case.
