Landlords in Kenya are being called upon to show compassion to their tenants, especially during these challenging economic times.
One such landlord, Martin Munene, has taken it upon himself to exempt his tenants from paying rent for four months.
Speaking at the weekend, Munene revealed that he had initially offered a three-month rent waiver in April, but has since extended it by another month.
"I have talked to some of these people and they have very many problems. So I decided to let them mainly worry about what they will eat. Some of them have been loyal to me for more than five years and it is my turn to return the favour," Munene explained.
According to Munene, he has missed out on collecting approximately Sh400,000 in rent during the four-month period.
However, he has distributed some food to his vulnerable tenants, showing his commitment to their well-being.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had earlier called on property owners to be considerate of tenants who are struggling to pay rent.
