Bishop Francis Mugweru, a 62-year-old evangelical church leader, was found brutally murdered in Thika, Kenya, on July 10, 2020. His body was discovered in a thicket 300 meters from his home in Kiganjo, Thika sub-county.
Mugweru had made headlines in August 2019 for eloping with a married woman and her three children, sparking controversy and public outcry. He had officiated the woman's marriage and even signed the marriage certificate.
According to his brother, Samuel Njuguna, Mugweru was dragged from his home on Thursday night and clobbered to death. The body had deep cuts and the head was hit with a blunt object.
Joyspring Soul Winning Worship church, where Mugweru was the bishop, is located in Juja Farm. The church's worshippers described Mugweru as a calm and loving man who related well with people.
"We want justice for our slain brother, father, and spiritual leader. Police should leave no stone unturned until they apprehend the assassins," Njuguna told journalists.
Mugweru and his wife, Agnes Wangivi, had separated in 2013 after 34 years of marriage. He had rented a house in the neighborhood for the woman he took away from her husband.
