Manchester University has chosen to honour Marcus Rashford, the England international footballer, with an honorary doctorate degree for his outstanding contributions in the fight against child poverty.

On July 15, 2020, the University of Manchester announced that Rashford would be the youngest recipient of the award, previously held by Sir Alex Ferguson.

As part of his efforts to combat child poverty, Rashford led a campaign to extend free school meals for children during the coronavirus pandemic in England.

His impassioned plea to the UK government in June 2020 led to a significant change in policy, with the government eventually agreeing to extend free school meals.

"It's a proud day for myself and my family," Rashford said in a statement. "When you look at the great names that have been awarded this doctorate in the past, it's humbling."

Former Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson and Bobby Charlton have previously received the award from the University of Manchester.

Manchester United, led by Rashford, currently occupies fifth position on the Premier League table with three games remaining in the season.
