On July 15, 2020, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia announced the resumption of local flights in Kenya, a move expected to revive the tourism sector and rescue the country's economy from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the launch of Kenya Airways' passenger services to domestic destinations, including Kisumu, Mombasa, and Diani, Macharia urged the airline to use the return to local skies as a benchmark for success in ensuring safety against the coronavirus.

"Let me thank Jomo Kenyatta Airport for making sure protocols are being followed. Let us ensure this is a success, because if we do not do it properly, that opportunity of going international may be reversed," the CS said.

Kenya Airways had lost an estimated Sh10.6 billion in revenues in the six months to June, but the return of local flights is expected to boost the national carrier.

As part of the protocols to ensure safety, passengers will be required to wear masks at all times, seats and toilets will be cleaned and fumigated frequently, and sanitizers will be available on board.

Commenting on the development, KQ board Chair Michael Joseph said the airline has adhered to the protocols necessary to safely fly, in accordance with international standards.

The airline will continuously review the protocols in place and update them where necessary to continue being ahead of the curve when it comes to safety.

Kenya Airways will fly two times daily to Mombasa and once daily to Kisumu, with the option to increase frequencies as demand picks up.
