Published on July 15, 2020
The Kenya Met Department has issued a warning of strong winds expected to cause massive destruction in 15 counties. The winds, which are expected to start on Thursday, July 16, will be accompanied by large waves at the coastal area.
According to the Met Department, the winds will be moving at a speed of 30 knots (15.4 meters/second) on Thursday and strengthen to 40 knots (20.56 m/s) on Friday, July 17. On Saturday, July 18, the winds will be expected to reduce to 30 knots (15.4 m/s).
The counties likely to be affected by the strong winds include Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale.
The Met Department has warned residents in these counties to be on the lookout for potentially destructive winds. The department has also advised people with asthmatic conditions and respiratory-related diseases to stay indoors.
Strong winds have caused destruction in the past, including in October 2019 when strong winds blew off roofs and reduced visibility in several counties, including Nairobi and Mombasa.
Motorists were cautioned against driving into or through the dust storm, while those in the dust already were advised to turn their headlights, slow down, and safely pull over.
The Met Department has also warned of very high waves that may lower visibility, cause capsizing of boats, and threaten the safety of those engaged in water sports and recreational activities.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to be on high alert and take necessary precautions to avoid any damage or harm.
