On Monday, Rwandan high court proceedings revealed that President Edgar Lungu of Zambia allegedly promised the National Liberation Front (FLN) $1m to help topple the Rwandan government.

According to reports, President Lungu made a down payment of $150,000 in support of rebel attacks.

However, in a statement on Tuesday, President Lungu's spokesman, Isaac Chipampe, dismissed the allegations as 'false and must be treated with the contempt they deserve.'

Chipampe added, 'The peoples of Zambia and Rwanda continue to enjoy strong and fraternal relations founded on mutual respect.'

Callixte Nsabimana, the rebel leader, is facing 17 charges.
