July 15, 2020 - Kisumu County has witnessed the launch of the second phase of the Kazi Mtaani program, a Sh10 billion initiative aimed at engaging youth in various activities to cushion them from the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Principal Secretary for ICT and Innovation, Jerome Ochieng, who launched the program in Kisumu, noted that the number of youth registering for the work has increased threefold compared to the first phase.
According to Ochieng, the government has learned from the challenges experienced in the first phase and has made necessary adjustments to ensure a seamless implementation of the second phase.
The program, which has seen an increase in coverage for settlement areas, aims to ensure a clean environment and provide employment opportunities for the youth.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta is keen to engage the young meaningfully during this period as the country battles the spread of Coronavirus,” Ochieng said.
The Kazi Mtaani program is a concerted effort by the government to engage the youth and deter them from joining criminal activities, as the pandemic has rendered many young people jobless.
