On July 15, 2020, the second phase of kazi mtaani was launched in Kisumu County, marking a significant step in the government's efforts to mitigate the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the youth.
Principal Secretary for ICT and Innovation, Jerome Ochieng, who launched the program, reported a three-fold increase in the number of youth registering for the work compared to the first phase.
The government has learned from the challenges experienced in the first phase and has made adjustments to ensure a seamless implementation of the second phase.
According to Ochieng, the coverage for settlement areas has also increased, with the government striving to maintain a clean environment.
He emphasized that the funds for the program have been allocated in the current financial year's budget and called for a concerted effort from the people to ensure the program's success.
"President Uhuru Kenyatta is keen to engage the young meaningfully during this period as the country battles the spread of Coronavirus," Ochieng said.
The program aims to engage the youth and deter them from joining criminal activities, as the majority of young people were rendered jobless due to the pandemic.
