US President Donald Trump has taken credit for the UK's decision to ban Huawei from its 5G network by 2027, a move that has significant implications for the Chinese telecoms giant.

On July 14, 2020, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered Huawei equipment to be purged completely from Britain's 5G network by the end of 2027, a decision that has been attributed to Trump's influence.

According to Trump, he was responsible for convincing many countries, including the UK, not to use Huawei due to security concerns. 'We convinced many countries, many countries, I did this myself for the most part, not to use Huawei, because we think it is an unsafe security risk, it's a big security risk,' Trump said.

The UK's decision is a significant blow to Huawei, which has operated in Britain for 20 years and has a significant presence in Europe, accounting for 24% of sales last year.

Operators in the UK will no longer be able to purchase 5G components from Huawei from the end of this year, and existing Huawei gear must be removed from the 5G network by 2027.
