On July 15, 2020, Kisumu County witnessed the launch of the second phase of the kazi mtaani program, a Sh10 billion initiative aimed at mitigating the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the youth.
Principal Secretary for ICT and Innovation, Jerome Ochieng, launched the program, highlighting a significant increase in the number of youth registering for the work, with the figure tripling compared to the first phase.
According to Ochieng, the government has learned from the challenges experienced in the first phase and has implemented measures to ensure a seamless rollout of the second phase.
The program's coverage has also been expanded to include more settlements, with the government striving to maintain a clean environment.
PS Ochieng emphasized that the funds allocated for the program are part of this year's financial budget and called for collective effort to ensure its success.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta is keen to engage the young meaningfully during this period as the country battles the spread of Coronavirus,” he said.
The kazi mtaani program aims to engage the youth and deter them from joining criminal activities, as the pandemic has left many young people jobless.
