On July 15, 2020, Kenya Airways resumed its domestic flights, marking a significant step towards reviving the country's economy, which has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The airline will operate two flights daily to Mombasa and one flight daily to Kisumu, with plans to increase frequencies as demand picks up.
According to Allan Kilavuka, the Group MD and CEO of Kenya Airways, the airline has been working closely with the Ministry of Health and Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to implement safety measures and protocols to ensure the health and safety of passengers, crew, and staff.
‘I want to thank our customers for giving us the opportunity to serve them and for trusting us to get them to their different destinations safely,’ Kilavuka said.
‘A special mention to our staff for their outstanding contribution in ensuring that our customers continue to be reunited with their loved ones across our network,’ he added.
As the airline prepares to operate under exceptional circumstances, Kilavuka emphasized that the health and safety of passengers, crew, and staff remain the utmost priority.
‘We will continuously review the protocols and update where necessary to continue being ahead of the curve when it comes to safety,’ he said.
Customers will be required to adhere to COVID-19 safety measures and protocols while on board the aircraft.
‘I would like to assure the public that Kenya Airports Authority has put in place the recommended health and safety protocols and we are ready to reconnect with our airports users,’ said Alex Gitari, Ag. Managing Director, Kenya Airports Authority.
Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) welcomed the resumption of domestic flights, stating that it will contribute towards the recovery of Kenya's economy.
‘The resumption of domestic flights will add to the revival of domestic tourism that has recorded an all-time low,’ said Betty Radier, the KTB Chief Executive Officer.
