Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has received a temporary reprieve after an impeachment motion against her was withdrawn at the Kitui County Assembly on July 14, 2020.

The motion, sponsored by Wiper Party MCAs led by County Assembly Majority Leader Peter Kilonzo, was withdrawn due to concerns that it would not meet the two-thirds threshold required for debate and passage.

According to Kilonzo, some MCAs had gone missing, reducing the number of votes needed to send Ngilu home.

The impeachment motion was tabled against Ngilu over allegations of violating the Constitution and County Government Act, abuse of office, and failure to account for public funds.

Ngilu was also accused of undermining the authority of the County Assembly and conflict of interest in awarding county tenders.
