Wednesday, July 15, 2020, marked a significant development in the aviation industry as the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) extended the validity of pilot licences by 45 days.

This move, necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has provided a much-needed relief to airlines whose aviators do not have up-to-date permits.

According to Gilbert Kibe, the Director General of KCAA, the extension has been granted to allow pilots to undergo proficiency tests, which are essential for maintaining their Commercial Pilot License (CPL).

Kenya Airways, in particular, has been affected by the pandemic, as many of its pilots were unable to undergo training in Johannesburg or Amsterdam due to airspace restrictions.

However, with the easing of restrictions by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Kenya Airways is now planning to have its pilots undergo proficiency tests in Amsterdam over the next three months.

Speaking to Shipping and Logistics, Allan Kilavuka, the Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Airways, stated that the airline would not allow crew members with limited hours in flying to operate once the skies open.

Mr. Kilavuka emphasized that the airline is looking for alternative means of certification for its Embraer 190 pilots, ensuring that they can fly safely once operations resume.
