Sergeant Slutman, a 14-year veteran of the Marine Corps, was known for his bravery and selflessness. He had received medals for his heroism in 2014 after rescuing an unconscious woman from a burning building in the South Bronx. Despite his age, he was constantly challenging his fellow Marines to keep up with him.

Attack on Their Convoy

On April 8, 2020, a car bomb exploded near a convoy carrying the three Marines, wounding five Czech troops. The incident occurred just before 4 p.m. as the convoy approached an intersection near Bagram Airfield.

The Taliban quickly claimed responsibility for the attack, which highlighted the ongoing risks and costs of the war in Afghanistan. The incident also drew attention to the Russian bounties investigation, which had been focusing on the three Marines.
