Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has narrowly escaped impeachment after the motion to remove her from office collapsed.
The motion, which was set to be tabled on July 15, 2020, was withdrawn by the mover, George Ndoto, citing unavoidable circumstances.
According to documents verified by Nyakundi Report, Majority Leader Peter Mwikya Kilonzo said that the decision to withdraw the motion was due to the speaker's interference with the impeachment process.
Ngilu's lawyers had accused Speaker George Ndoto of being partisan and biased in the performance of his duties, stating that he was behind the impeachment process and not the Majority Leader.
However, Ndoto maintained that he was simply following the county assembly's standing orders, which restrict the process of removing a governor to a specific timeline.
Ngilu had prepared to appear before the assembly and had a full response ready, but the motion's withdrawal has put an end to the proceedings.
As reported by Nyakundi Report on July 14, 2020, the impeachment process was set to begin on July 15, 2020, with Ngilu appearing before the assembly to defend herself.
