Instagram's Latest Feature: Pinned Comments

July 7, 2020, marked a significant update for Instagram users as the platform introduced pinned comments to everyone. This feature, which was first tested in May, allows users to pin up to three comments to the top of the comments section on their posts.

According to Vishal Shah, Instagram's VP of Product, pinned comments aim to reinforce positivity on the app and limit harassment and bullying in the comment section. This feature is part of a broader effort to create a more welcoming environment for users.

To access pinned comments, users need to update their Instagram app to the latest version. Once updated, they can tap on any of their existing posts and head to the comments section. To pin a comment, users simply swipe left and tap on the thumbtack icon.

Up to three comments can be pinned, which will appear immediately under the post with a 'pinned' label underneath. These comments will 'mask' all other comments, which can only be seen by tapping on 'view all comments.' Users can pin and unpin comments as many times as they want, but each user receives a notification when their comment is pinned.

Instagram's introduction of pinned comments is a step towards creating a more positive and inclusive community on the platform.
