Kenya is facing a COVID-19 surge, with cases increasing by over 200% after President Uhuru Kenyatta eased some measures, including reducing curfew hours.
Dr. Alex Awiti, Vice Provost of the Agha Khan University, has urged the President to reconsider introducing lockdown measures, such as movement restrictions, to contain the spread of the virus.
According to Dr. Awiti, the President's move to remove cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa, and Mandera was 'untimely' and has led to a significant increase in cases.
Dr. Awiti advised the President to re-introduce lockdown measures, including longer curfew hours, to prevent the spread of the virus, which has become a hotspot in Nairobi.
"As positive cases surge, President Kenyatta should re-introduce lockdown measures, close bars, restrict travel, and implement longer curfew hours," Dr. Awiti stated.
